Tutorial: How to draw an egg in Ibis Paint

White egg drawing on a blue background

This post contains an Easter related tutorial.

What kind of tutorial?

This tutorial is about how to digitally draw an egg in Ibis Paint (The one shown above).
"Ibis Paint" is available in the Google Play store.

How to draw an egg in Ibis Paint:

  1. Open the Ibis Paint app
  2. Choose “My Gallery”
  3. Click on the plus
  4. Choose a size on which you want to draw the egg. I chose 1,000 x 1,000 pixels.
  5. Click “OK”
  6. A canvas will appear in the size you chose
  7. Click on “1” on the bottom bar
  8. Click on the third button behind “Background”. Transparancy is visible on the canvas.
  9. Click next to the canvas
  10. On the left, click on the button with a pencil
  11. A menu opens. Choose a drawing tool: a Hard felt-tip pen for example.
Thickness at the beginning and end 100%.
  12. Choose the color: White
  13. Click on the button with ruler at the top
  14. A small screen opens. In the top half, choose an elliptical ruler
  15. In the bottom half, choose a symmetrical ruler: the mirrored one
  16. This splits the canvas in two
  17. Drag the circles on the right and bottom of the ruler to change the width and/or height until you reach the desired size of the egg.
  18. Drag the middle red circle exactly on the blue circle of the center line.
  19. If necessary, zoom in by keeping two fingers on the screen and moving them apart across the screen. Repeat zooming if necessary
  20. As you can see, guide lines appear to make it easier
  21. Determine the thickness of the felt-tip pen. Move the slider and a circle will temporarily appear on the canvas. This is how thick the tip of the marker will be
  22. Draw a small section on the oval, up to the blue center line. The same drawing automatically appears mirrored on the other side. The bottom of the egg has emerged.
  23. Grab the bottom red circle and move it to the left. The elliptical ruler rotates.
  24. Grab the middle red circle and drag the ruler so that the red line is at the bottom, in the middle of the end of the white line.
  25. Draw a piece upwards from one end. Make sure this fits snugly on the bottom of the egg. You can undo by clicking on the button with a curved arrow pointing to the left.
  26. Turn the elliptical ruler straight again
  27. Move the center of the elliptical ruler onto the blue, symmetrical ruler.
  28. Draw the curve of the egg at the top

Improve the drawing of the egg

If necessary, remove a mistake. For example: a kink.
The following steps show how to adjust / erase that.

  1. Click on the “1” on the bottom bar.
  2. A screen opens. Click on “+”
  3. A second layer has emerged. That's just to be sure. This way the first layer remains good.
  4. Click next to the canvas
  5. Click on the button with a hand at the top
  6. A screen opens. Choose the curved line
  7. Make sure the symmetrical mirrored ruler is visible
  8. Click near the spot where the kink is.
  9. Click a little further. Now there are 2 dots. The first is red, the next are blue. Every dot can be moved.
  10. Make sure that the symmetrically mirrored ruler is turned on.
  11. Satisfied? Click on the green check mark.
  12. Click on the “2” on the bottom bar
  13. A screen opens. Make sure the second layer is selected. Then click on the button with an arrow above two lines. (That button is in that small screen, on the right bar, above the trash can.)
  14. The two layers are joined downwards. Click next to the canvas
  15. The kink can still be seen. Select an eraser
  16. Again click on the hand at the top
  17. Choose curved line again
  18. Click to see dots and move them as desired
  19. If necessary, thicken the tip of the eraser
  20. Zoom out if necessary to see the whole.
  21. Is it to your liking? Click on the green check mark again

Why not erase immediately?

Then the line becomes thinner, so that it is no longer equal.
(In this case it doesn't really matter, because the egg will be filled in a moment. Still, now you know how it works.)

The rim of the egg is ready.

To complete the egg, we're going to fill it up.

Filling in the egg

  1. Click on the button with the bucket in the left bar
  2. A popup will appear on the right. Click on the gear.
  3. A screen opens.
  4. Make sure the sliders behind “continuous filling” and “filling bottom of the line” are set to the right
  5. To turn off: 1
  6. Strength: move the slider. For example 56%. Not to 100, because then the entire canvas will be filled.
  7. Click in the egg.
  8. The egg is filled. Is it not completely filled? Undo it by clicking on the curved arrow pointing to the left at the bottom of the bar.
  9. Adjust “expand” to 1.5 and click in the egg again.

How to save a drawing in Ibis Paint

To save the drawing (or other creations) in Ibis Paint to your device:
